Chattanooga, Tenn. — A local non-profit, The Chattery, successfully hosted a Holiday Market in celebration of Small Business Saturday, despite facing challenges after their building was set on fire earlier this year. The event highlighted the importance of supporting local businesses and fostered community spirit.
The Chattery, known for providing affordable and accessible classes for adults, has been navigating a difficult period since their building was damaged in a fire set by a 21-year-old man. Founders Shawanda Mason and Jennifer Holder have expressed their appreciation for the community’s support during this challenging time.
"It’s been nice to see the community sort of step up and help us when we were trying to find a space to host classes," said Mason.
With assistance from Parkside Hill and local supporters, The Chattery was able to continue its mission by hosting the Holiday Market, which coincided with Small Business Saturday.
Small Business Saturday is an initiative aimed at encouraging consumers to shop at local businesses. This year, the event was particularly meaningful for vendors and shoppers alike.
The Holiday Market allowed customers to engage directly with local artisans, witnessing the creation of products firsthand. This interaction fosters a sense of community and connection between consumers and small business owners.
Haley Bartlett, a shopper at the market, emphasized the importance of supporting local:
"It’s always really nice to remember your money is going directly into the pockets of the other people in town."
While The Chattery is currently uncertain about when they will reopen their original space, the success of the Holiday Market has provided a glimmer of hope. The event not only showcased the resilience of local businesses but also reinforced the community’s commitment to supporting one another during tough times.
As the holiday season approaches, events like Small Business Saturday serve as a reminder of the vital role that local businesses play in the economy and the community’s fabric. The Chattery and its vendors are optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing to serve the Chattanooga community.
