In an unusual incident in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, a deer crashed through the window of Civically Inc., a local non-profit organization, causing significant damage. The event, which occurred on a Saturday morning in October, was captured on surveillance cameras and has since drawn attention from the community, who rallied to support the organization in its time of need.
On a seemingly ordinary Saturday morning, Marita Garrett, the president and CEO of Civically Inc., arrived at the organization’s office to prepare for the day. As she approached, she was met with a shocking sight: a shattered window and chaos inside. Initially, it appeared that a break-in had occurred, but witnesses quickly clarified that a deer was the culprit.
Garrett recounted the moment, saying, "They were like you’re not going to believe it, but it was a deer. And I was like, a deer? Like, middle of downtown Wilkinsburg?" Surveillance footage confirmed the bizarre event, showing the deer darting across Penn Avenue before crashing into the window.
The aftermath of the incident was significant. The deer left behind tufts of fur, broken glass, and damaged equipment, including recently ordered printing materials. Garrett described the scene as resembling a crime scene investigation, with debris scattered everywhere.
The total cost of repairs was estimated at around $4,000, which included:
Despite the unexpected financial burden, the local community stepped up to assist Civically Inc. Donations poured in, totaling approximately $2,600, which helped alleviate some of the financial strain. Garrett expressed her gratitude, stating, "I really firmly believe you put out good, you do receive good."
With a new window installed, Civically Inc. is now focused on continuing its mission to support the community. The organization is known for its free store, which provides clothing and household goods, as well as a fresh market offering free produce.
Garrett humorously noted that she had contacted the police not to file charges against the deer but to check on its well-being after the incident. As of now, there is no update on the deer’s whereabouts.
Civically Inc. remains committed to fundraising efforts to cover the remaining repair costs, with a goal of $4,000. The Free Store Wilkinsburg will be open for the next two Saturday mornings, continuing to serve the community while recovering from this wild encounter.
