The Beacon Project, a local non-profit in Norman, Oklahoma, is making a significant impact by providing food and essential resources to underprivileged teens. Founded by Angela Jiminez-Calhoun, the initiative aims to support students who face various challenges, ensuring they have access to meals, tutoring, and a safe space to thrive.
Located just a short walk from Norman High School, The Beacon Project operates out of a cozy building where teens can find refuge from their daily struggles. Angela Jiminez-Calhoun, a former math teacher, recognized the pressing needs of her students and took action to create a supportive environment.
"As pretty as Norman is, there is still an underside where people are underserved, and people are struggling," said Annette Chavarria, a work-study student at the University of Oklahoma who tutors at The Beacon Café.
Since its inception in 2019, The Beacon Project has evolved from Jiminez-Calhoun’s home-based efforts to a fully operational non-profit. The Beacon Café serves as a hub where students can enjoy free hot meals during lunch and after school, providing them with nourishment and a place to relax.
The Beacon Project goes beyond just providing meals. Here are some of the key services offered:
Jiminez-Calhoun emphasizes the importance of dignity in her approach to helping teens. Many students do not reach out for help, often due to pride or the fear of being judged.
"There are a lot of teens out there who don’t ask for help. Sometimes they’re living with their grandparents or siblings, and they’re the ones who have guardianship of their siblings," she explained.
The Beacon Project aims to alleviate the burdens these teens carry, ensuring that lack of food or basic necessities does not hinder their education or self-worth.
Recently, Jiminez-Calhoun was honored with a Pay It 4Ward award, recognizing her dedication to the community. With a $400 grant from First Fidelity Bank, she was surprised by Chavarria and local news representatives for her outstanding contributions.
The Beacon Project stands as a testament to the power of community and the impact of grassroots initiatives. By providing essential resources and fostering a sense of belonging, the organization is not only feeding hungry teens but also nurturing their potential and helping them envision a brighter future.
Through the collective efforts of volunteers and community members, The Beacon Project continues to shine a light on the importance of supporting underprivileged youth, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and empowered to succeed.
