Dozens of families in Transylvania County, North Carolina, are facing homelessness after Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to their homes. With 74 structures reported as substantially damaged, local non-profits are urgently seeking housing solutions to assist those affected.
Hurricane Helene has left a lasting impact on the community, with many families now struggling to find shelter. The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners has decided to delay the 2025 property reappraisal until January 1, 2026, in light of the disaster. This decision reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the community as they recover from the storm.
In response to the urgent need for housing, the Housing Assistance Corporation is leading efforts to find temporary accommodations for those affected. Executive Director Meg Lebeck emphasized the importance of keeping families within their communities.
"We really want people to be able to stay in our communities. We want our neighbors to be here, and until we have those FEMA campers coming in for individual households, we’re trying to bridge the gap," Lebeck stated.
The community is encouraged to assist in various ways:
As the community rallies together to support those affected by Hurricane Helene, the need for immediate housing solutions remains critical. Local organizations are working tirelessly to bridge the gap until more permanent solutions can be established. The resilience of the community shines through as they come together to support their neighbors in this time of need.
