The Millennium Hotel in St. Louis, which has been vacant since 2014, is set to undergo a significant transformation as the Gateway Arch Park Foundation has announced its acquisition of the property. This move aims to revitalize the iconic structure and enhance the downtown area.
Originally opened in 1969, the Millennium Hotel was once the largest hotel in St. Louis, boasting 780 rooms and 19 suites. It was particularly famous for its revolving restaurant located atop the 28-story tower. However, the hotel fell into disrepair over the years, leading to its closure in early 2014.
The Gateway Arch Park Foundation’s acquisition is seen as a pivotal step in revitalizing a crucial part of downtown St. Louis. Executive Director Ryan McClure emphasized the potential for the Millennium site to enhance the vibrancy and accessibility of the area.
"This project perfectly aligns with our mission to better connect Gateway Arch National Park and its surroundings to the rest of downtown," McClure stated.
The foundation plans to work closely with the St. Louis Development Corporation (SLDC), the City of St. Louis, and Greater St. Louis, Inc. (GSL) to develop a comprehensive redevelopment plan. Neal Richardson, President & CEO of SLDC, expressed confidence in the foundation’s ability to prioritize community interests during the redevelopment process.
The redevelopment of the Millennium Hotel is expected to build on the current momentum in downtown St. Louis. The Gateway Arch Park Foundation has previously played a significant role in transforming the Gateway Arch National Park, and this new project aims to continue that trend.
As the city looks to the future, the revitalization of the Millennium Hotel could serve as a catalyst for further development in the area, potentially attracting more visitors and residents alike.
The acquisition of the Millennium Hotel by the Gateway Arch Park Foundation marks a new chapter for this historic property. With plans for redevelopment underway, the foundation aims to create a vibrant and accessible space that honors the legacy of the hotel while contributing to the revitalization of downtown St. Louis.
