A local non-profit organization in Charleston, South Carolina, hosted its second annual Shuck Fest, raising funds for the Lonon Foundation, which supports children with a parent or caregiver diagnosed with cancer. The event, filled with community spirit and generosity, aims to empower families facing the challenges of cancer.
The Lonon Foundation was established by Anna Lonon after the loss of her husband, Michael, to cancer nearly a decade ago. With two young children at the time, Anna recognized the importance of support for families navigating the emotional and financial burdens of cancer. The foundation’s mission is to provide resources and assistance to children who are coping with a parent’s illness, ensuring they feel empowered and supported.
The Shuck Fest event featured a lively atmosphere where attendees participated in oyster shucking, a live auction, and various donation opportunities. Family members and volunteers played a crucial role in the event’s success, with Anna’s aunt being one of the first to contribute during the auction.
The goal for this year’s Shuck Fest was to raise $50,000, a target that seemed ambitious but was met with overwhelming support. Within just the first hour of the event, over $40,000 was raised, showcasing the community’s commitment to helping families in need.
Anna expressed her gratitude, stating, "It was just phenomenal to watch everybody. It’s just amazing to see people give from their heart to help people they don’t even know."
As the Lonon Foundation continues to grow, Anna plans to expand their team and focus on enhancing their support services, particularly in child-life support. The foundation aims to reach more families and provide the necessary resources to help children cope with the challenges of having a sick parent.
The success of Shuck Fest not only highlights the community’s generosity but also serves as a reminder of the impact that collective efforts can have in supporting those facing difficult times.
